Background
VIVITROL is a prescription medicine used to treat alcohol dependence and for the prevention of relapse to opioid dependence. It is indicated in patients who can abstain from alcohol and those who follow opioid detoxification.
The problem
Relapse rates for individuals in recovery surged from 40% to 60% following the pandemic.
Online alcohol sales skyrocketed by 262%, making avoidance of triggers even more difficult.
Social isolation, especially among Americans living alone, presented a significant threat to continued sobriety for those struggling with alcohol dependence.

The ask
Develop creative solutions that empower individuals in recovery and minimize the risk of relapse.
Solution
Reflect and Recover
Relapses occurs in three stages: The first stage is emotional. Let’s create an app that uses artificial intelligence to interpret human emotions through highly accurate facial recognition. Patients can use their phone’s front camera to reflect and identify indications of potential relapse, as well as offer suggestions to help them regain control of their sobriety and recovery.
Road to Recover
The second stage of relapse is mental. Alcohol ads, in-store promotions, and delivery apps have helped online sales of alcohol skyrocket. It has become more difficult for people in recovery to avoid the triggers that make them more susceptible to relapse. What if we could avoid some of those trigger points?
A partnership with the Waze app would allow patients to customize their trigger points and have real-time updates to avoid them.
OpenWhen
Lastly, the third stage of relapse is physical. In 2020 as many as 35.7mm Americans lived alone. For those struggling with alcohol dependency, loneliness and isolation can seriously threaten their sobriety. What if we could facilitate supportive messages from their loved ones?
OpenWhen would be a nation-wide letter exchange for people in recovery. Patients would receive letters from family members, friends, and support groups, offering words of advice and comfort for triggering moments.
